June is Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month, providing an opportunity to shed light on the impact of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. At our hospice, we believe in fostering a compassionate and supportive community for those affected by these conditions. Join us this June as we go purple to raise awareness and take action against Alzheimer’s disease. We will explore ways to help individuals with Alzheimer’s and dementia and how you can play a role in their journey.

Understanding Alzheimer’s and Dementia
Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive brain disorder that affects memory, thinking, and behavior. Dementia, on the other hand, is a term used to describe various symptoms resulting from different brain disorders. Both conditions require specialized care and support tailored to the unique needs of the individuals affected.

How You Can Help

  1. Educate Yourself: Learning about Alzheimer’s and dementia is crucial in providing the proper support. Familiarize yourself with the symptoms, progression, and available treatments to effectively assist those in need.
  2. Be Patient and Understanding: Individuals with Alzheimer’s and dementia experience cognitive decline, memory loss, and difficulty communicating. Practice patience and empathy, and provide a calm and safe environment for them.
  3. Foster Emotional Connection: Engage in meaningful activities that stimulate their minds and evoke positive emotions. Share memories, listen to their stories, or participate in activities they enjoy. Establishing emotional connections can provide comfort and a sense of belonging.
  4. Encourage Brain-Healthy Habits: Promote a brain-healthy lifestyle to help individuals maintain cognitive function. Encourage regular sleep patterns, a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and Omega-3 fatty acids, engagement in mentally stimulating activities, and physical exercise.
  5. Offer Support and Respite: Caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s or dementia can be demanding and emotionally challenging. Extend your assistance by providing respite to caregivers, giving them time to recharge and care for their well-being.

Go Purple and Make a Difference
You can actively participate in the Alzheimer’s Association’s Go Purple in June campaign to support those affected by Alzheimer’s and dementia. Here are some ways to get involved:

  1. Spread Awareness: Wear purple throughout June and share the purpose behind it. Use your social media platforms to share educational content, personal stories, and resources to raise awareness about Alzheimer’s and dementia.
  2. Fundraising: Organize a Purple with a Purpose event to raise funds for Alzheimer’s research and support services. Encourage your employees, co-workers, or customers to contribute to this cause.
  3. Participate in The Longest Day: June 21st marks The Longest Day, a global event dedicated to honoring individuals living with Alzheimer’s. Consider organizing a team or participating in community events to raise funds and show your support.
  4. Walk to End Alzheimer’s: Join or create a team for the Walk to End Alzheimer’s, an annual event that raises funds and awareness for the cause. Engage your colleagues, friends, and family to participate in a meaningful experience.
  5. Collaborate with Hospice and Support Organizations: By partnering with local hospice organizations and Alzheimer’s support groups, you can create a network of resources and support for individuals and families affected by these conditions.
